The steady increase in air traffic and the deregulation of air transport are some of the factors that have led to the elaboration of a project for the expansion and modernization of Bilbao's Airport. This project is currently under way. The main feature
of the project is the new terminal, designed by the architect Santiago
Calatrava. An investment of 42 million Euro has being devoted to complete
the project. It covers an area of 25,000 m2 and is able to handle 2.5 million
passengers per year. The opening was on November 19th of 2000.
