The International Dimension of the Basque Municipalities

EUDEL-The Association of Basque Municipalities is a public institution founded in 1.982, with the purpose of uniting the will of the Basque local corporations.

The Basque Municipality, that has a long and unique history set in the statutory tradition, enjoys nowadays, thanks to the special organizative design of the Basque institutions, a high level of power within its autonomy. The Municipalities of the current Basque Autonomous Community are associated in EUDEL and have a joint voice.

Its task is twofold: internal and external.

The representation of the Basque Municipality in the presence of other institutions

EUDEL is an essential element when negotiating with the City Councils about the different aspects of the Basque institutional organization, or when concluding the policy or infrastructural projects directly concerning the local life. Also, EUDEL carries out a permanent work of technical and legal advice to the Municipalities.

The progressive importance of the municipal institution in its setting has also become apparent in EUDEL's activity and its development within the Basque society. The Association has signed cooperation agreements with different social, cultural and academic institutions, and contributes together with the other establishments to the development of the Basque Country.

The international dimension of the Basque Municipality

EUDEL-The Association of Basque Municipalities is an autonomous and self-sufficient organization, independent of any other association or federation of local corporations. Besides, it has an external projection that embraces all the forums where the municipal voice is internationally heard.

EUDEL is a full member of the Council of Municipalities and Regions of Europe (CMRE, European section of the International Union of Local Authorities) and member of the Council of Local and Regional Powers of Europe (CPLRE, run by the European Council). EUDEL also participates in the capaccity of expert in the sessions of the IV Comission of Urban Policies of the Regions Committes.

Within its international dimension, EUDEL has actively contributed to the asylum of refugees of the former Yugoslavia in the Basque Country and has promoted the participation of many Basque City Councils in different community programmes within the European network of municipalities.

Vitoria-Gasteiz, the political and administrative capital of the Basque Autonomous Community is EUDEL's headquarters, and there is a Secretary in Bilbao, the most populous town in the territory.
