GETXOKO ELEIZALDE TXIT PRESTU ETA TXIT ZINTZOAREN UDALA

AYUNTAMIENTO DE LA M.N. Y M.L. ANTEIGLESIA DE GETXO

Getxo Town Council is the public authority which manages and administers the public services which are of the utmost importance in the running and functioning of the town of Getxo in the Province of Bizkaia.

This municipality lies in El Abra bay, where the Nervion River meets the sea, and covers an area of 11.4 km².

With a population of over 82,000, Getxo Town Council has at its disposal an annual budget of over Ptas 7,700 million.

Getxo is a residential district whose origins date back to the XII century. Its main economic activity is based on the public and private services sector. It is recognized as the municipality with the highest working population per 1,000 inhabitants within the Basque Country in these sectors. Both its specialized shops and restaurants are renowned all over the country.

The fact that 42.6% of the employment rate is made up of managing directors and technicians, contrasts with 19.1% in the Basque Country, and 16.2% in Spain. This result corresponds directly to the level of skill of people from Getxo: 28.4% of the population has graduated in intermediate or third level education, as compared with 13.3% in the Basque Country and 6.9% in Spain.

Another outstanding feature is the cultural and sporting agenda in the area, since some of the most important artistic events in Bizkaia and in the Basque Country are held in Getxo, such as the International Jazz Festival (specialising in European Jazz), The International Folk Festival or the International Crafts Fair.

As far as Sports are concerned, thanks to the extraordinary public and private facilities which Getxo boasts, most sports can be practised in the area, except for winter sports. The Fadura Municipal Sports Complex, which is considered to be the best of its kind in the Basque country, as well as the Royal Maritime Club of El Abra, and the golf course, which is situated very close to the shore and belongs to the Royal Golf Society of Neguri, are examples of these.

The municipality is also famous for its sailing and rowing regattas held in El Abra Bay, as well as its high standard rugby team (Spanish League and the Copa de Rey Champions on numerous occasions), and also the International Cycling Circuit.

Among the most important projects achieved by Getxo Town Council are the following:

  1. The construction of the new yachting harbour in Arriluce which will hold 750 vessels, and include some of the various commercial and service facilities which will cover an area of over 7,000 m².

  2. The promotion of the municipality as a tourist resort for those keen on leisure activities intended for recreational, sporting, historical, sightseeing and gastronomical purposes.

  3. The setting up of a new facilities area for the creation of the new Parque Terciario (i.e. the exploitation of available land intended for the construction of a service complex: offices, small industries, and so on)

In this municipality the most remarkable British, American, German and French communities in the Basque Country co-exist. Getxo has had a long held relationship with some parts of Britain and Germany, which it still holds. Its links to America are also important as a result of past Basque Immigrations to some parts of the United States, México, Venezuela, Uruguay and Argentina.

The municipality of Getxo is twinned to the Saharan Municipality of Bir Ganduz, and welcomes an important flow of students every year, who come from various European countries as well as the U.S.A.
