At the industrial heart of the Left Bank of the Nervion
Situation graphic
Our town is located at the eastern end of the Triano
hills. It borders on the municipalities of Trapagaran, Portugalete
and Baracaldo. It is a very hilly area, and the town is well known
for its steep streets. The hillsides on which the town is build slope down
to the Nervion, Galindo and Ballonti rivers, where
big industrial sites stand on areas which were once marshes and plains.
Two thirds of the town's 3,207,471m²
area consist of industrial land, and the remaining third is shared between
residential land and the rivers. This means that the built-up area of Sestao
is densely concentrated. Sestao was formerly
one of the Three Towns belonging to the Somorrostro Valley.
It became an independent area in 1805 and gained full administrative
independence in 1848.

In its earliest days it was an agricultural
and fishing village, but it was transformed into an industrial
town around one hundred years ago, and it is as an industrial town
that Sestao has had to face up to the rapid changes and industrial restructuring
processes of the last twenty years.
From 340 inhabitants in 1800
the population grew to 7,946 by 1895 and in 1979 reached
43,122. The present population is 34,027, and the numbers
continue to decrease.
The town is home to one thousand three hundred large,
medium and small companies in the processing, auxiliary and
service sectors, the most important of which are:
